Do you yearn to step up, to go after your dreams and fulfil your higher purpose, but feel as though something is holding you back?

Perhaps you currently feel stuck, frustrated with life and as though you’re treading water, like I have in the past? Or you worry about being judged and what others may think of you?

If some of this rings true, then please don’t imagine for one moment that you’re alone. As frustrating as these thoughts and concerns are, they’re also entirely normal, and our ego is largely to blame.

Like an overbearing mother our ego is constantly trying to thwart our growth, afraid of the unknown, or of us moving beyond our comfort zone. It likes to micromanage our every experience, to be in control. It is the voice of doubt in our ear, telling us we’re not good enough, that it’s not safe, or that we’ll be ridiculed or criticised for trying something new. And it is always concerned with what others may think of us.

Our ego strives to keep us separate from the world and operates from a position of fear, judgement and victimhood. Resistance, frustration, doubt, shame, struggle, sadness, feeling stuck, blaming or continually making excuses, are all indications your ego is getting the better of you. Ego is needy and loves drama. And it believes that in order for you to be complete and happy, you have to look outside of yourself. This may mean a new job, car, home or relationship, but something separate from you and this is NOT true. Happiness is an inside job.

The trouble is, ego and awareness cannot coexist together. True spiritual awakening can only occur once we realise and accept that we are not our thoughts, emotions or beliefs, or the attachments we place upon them. This is our ego. Our true spiritual or higher self is the source of unconditional love and is at one with the Universe. There is no separation and no ‘self’. Our perception of self as an isolated, physical person is entirely the work of our ego.

To be fair, it’s not all bad. In fact, we must give it credit where it’s due, as without this foundation in fear the human race would not have survived. Our ego does have its purpose and works hard to keep us safe and protected. If we were too chilled then it follows that we’d not take threats seriously. But give it too much control and it’s a different story!

Frustratingly, it’s at our most challenging times that it can really dig in and take a hold because the ego is terrified of the unknown. I was massively under the grip of my ego when my husband got ill and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer. Plunged into the depths of fear I found myself suffocating in victim mentality and catastrophising about all the ‘what-ifs’ of the future. And I know I’m not alone. Regardless of our best intentions, we are often guilty of trying to control our circumstances and think we must take charge of a situation. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, we must have faith, express gratitude and allow the Universe to deliver.

What is crucial to understand is that even at times you may find yourself in the depths of despair, as I did, there will always be a deeper reason why this has happened. Each moment of pain indicates an energetic and emotional clearing, that will ultimately allow you to fulfil the mission you’ve been incarnated to complete. In fact, it’s during periods of great loss and pain that the soul views as an opportunity to make way for new experiences to serve our highest expansion. Letting go of the outcome and admitting we don’t always know the answer is the ultimate release. Provided we dare to open up, this will set us on a more profound journey for the benefit of all and signifies we’re ready to walk the deeper path of our spiritual evolution.

However… One very important thing to bear in mind is that any attempt on your part to move beyond pain or fear, to rid yourself of limiting beliefs or step outside your comfort zone, will have the ego shift to panic mode faster than you can say DEFCON 1! And this can result in a spiritual detox of staggering proportions, where you’ll believe the Universe is massively conspiring against you. But understand this. As hard as it may seem if chaos surrounds you and everything seems to be going wrong, this is merely the work of the ego. It will do everything in its power to sabotage your efforts for growth and prevent you from venturing out into the unknown, but it doesn’t mean you can’t.

Whether you’re facing challenges right now, or simply yearn to take that leap of faith and step into your power, rest assured that everything is working out in perfect and divine timing. Trust your journey and allow good things to come to you. Your faith must be greater than your fear. Remember, your true, higher self is the part of you that operates directly according to your connection to Source energy and is love-based and at one with the Universe. You are never alone.

With all my love,
